Semicon Sweden – new investment in semiconductors

Svensk Elektronik is leading the establishment of Semicon Sweden, a new initiative for national coordination of the semiconductor ecosystem. ”With this initiative, Sweden is taking the next step to strengthen its position in Europe and establish itself as a significant player in semiconductor technology and future electronics,” says Sofia Persson Björk, Chairwoman of Svensk Elektronik.

Sweden is dependent on semiconductors in everything from the automotive industry to medical technology. There are several highly specialized competence nodes within the country, but there has been a lack of national coordination and strategy to strengthen Sweden's position in this critical sector. Now the industry organization Swedish Electronics, with support from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth and Development and partners such as RISE, Lund University, Halmstad University, Ideon Sciencepark and PhotonicSweden, the initiative for Semicon Sweden – an initiative that will bring together industrial companies, startups, research institutes and academia on a common platform.

National coordination for increased competitiveness

Semicon Sweden aims to build capacity and knowledge across the entire semiconductor value chain. By connecting different actors in industry and academia, the aim is to create a strong ecosystem for innovation and industrial growth. The goal is to increase competitiveness, attract more investments and strengthen Sweden's role in European collaborations, including the EU's Chips JU.

Major investments in semiconductors for the industry of the future

In recent years, SSF, the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Development and Vinnova have financed a number of projects in the semiconductor area, including: SCCC, C3NiT, ClassIC, 6G, Pilot line 4 and ”Semiconductors – a Swedish value chain”. Now Svensk Elektronik is receiving funding from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Development to coordinate these projects and at the same time strengthen Sweden's position in the area.

Regional development and international cooperation

Semicon Sweden is also expected to have a direct positive impact on the regional development where the players in the semiconductor value chain operate. Through the initiative, these players gain access to valuable knowledge, strategic networks and new business opportunities, while becoming more visible in the European market through a unified voice.

Collaboration is key

For Sweden to take a leading role in semiconductor technology, a strong and dynamic ecosystem is required where actors collaborate to strengthen the country's position. Through Semicon Sweden, companies, research institutes and academia can contribute to building a robust infrastructure for development and innovation in the semiconductor sector. Together, we can ensure Sweden's future competitiveness and establish ourselves as a significant player in strategic technology areas such as advanced semiconductors, AI and quantum technology.
