The strategically important semiconductor issue
Semicon Sweden
Semicon Sweden – Sweden's collective voice in the semiconductor world
Svensk Elektronik is the host organization for Semicon Sweden, the national initiative that works to proactively build an alliance of actors from industry, academia and research to strengthen Sweden's semiconductor ecosystem. Through active dialogue with authorities and decision-makers, Semicon Sweden contributes to defining and coordinating Sweden's strategic role in a European and global context. At the same time, Semicon Sweden works to make Swedish cutting-edge expertise visible internationally, increase our global footprint and establish Sweden as a sought-after partner for collaboration, innovation and investment.
Why Semicon Sweden?
Semiconductors are the foundation of all modern technology – they power everything from your smartphone to the electric vehicles of the future and renewable energy. As global demand surges and supply chains evolve, Europe is making strategic investments to ensure its technological sovereignty.
Although Sweden is not yet a dominant force on the global semiconductor map, we possess world-class research and development, deep clusters of expertise and a strong tradition of collaboration. What has been missing is a unified national voice. Through Semicon Sweden, we bring together key players from academia, start-ups, industry and research institutes to build a resilient, innovative and globally connected semiconductor ecosystem.
Strategic goals:
- Collect and coordinate activities and resources within the entire Swedish semiconductor value chain
- Make Swedish innovations, key competencies and investments visible – both nationally and internationally
- Develop a national semiconductor strategy
- Strengthen international research and innovation cooperation, with a particular focus on European initiatives such as the EU Chips JU
- Building a dynamic and resilient ecosystem that promotes long-term competitiveness and innovation capacity
Initiator:
Swedish Electronics (host organization and coordinator), RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Lund University, Halmstad University, Ideon Science Park, PhotonicSweden, Region Skåne, Region Östergötland
The initiative is run with a grant from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Development (Tillväxtverket).

Establishment of a competence center for semiconductor development
The establishment of competence centers according to Chips JU has begun for Europe and for Sweden.
These centres will conduct research and education in areas that are important for sustainable industrial and digital transformation and will be specialised in different key areas. The centres will play a fundamental role in strengthening Europe's semiconductor innovation ecosystem by providing companies – in particular SMEs and start-ups – with essential resources to develop semiconductor solutions, including support, training and access to infrastructure facilities established under the Chips Act, such as pilot lines and design platforms.
This targeted approach ensures long-term investment in local expertise, creating a sustained focus on innovation and growth.
For Sweden, Vinnova, together with universities and companies, is investing in eleven new competence centers (counted from January 2024).
The goal is for new knowledge and groundbreaking technology to be developed, disseminated and used to ultimately strengthen Sweden's competitiveness. The initiative will also contribute to attracting top talent for world-leading research and development in Sweden.
SCCC and Pilot lines EU Chips JU
Competence center for semiconductor development – Swedish Chip Competence Center (SCCC)
Semicon Sweden has a close collaboration with the Swedish Chip Competence Center (SCCC), Sweden's central node for semiconductor competence. SCCC supports and connects startups and small and medium-sized companies with researchers and innovators in cutting-edge technology. By offering education and support, they facilitate access to semiconductor technology and financing.
As an active part of the European Network of Competence Centres for Chips (ENCCC) within the Chips JU, SCCC bridges the gap between advanced research and market introduction. They offer concrete guidance and connect different actors to provide access to semiconductor technology, training, financing, pilot lines and advanced equipment. In this way, SCCC contributes to the success of both Swedish and European companies in the semiconductor industry.
SCCC exists to:
- Support startups and small and medium-sized enterprises with access to semiconductor technology and financing.
- Offer training in semiconductor design and production.
- Connecting Swedish companies with European research and funding opportunities.
- Helping companies gain access to pilot lines and state-of-the-art equipment.
- Promote Sweden's unique strengths in semiconductor technology, including power electronics, high-frequency technology and advanced materials.
Through SCCC (Swedish Chips Competence Centre), Swedish stakeholders have access to established pilot lines for semiconductor manufacturing within the EU Chips JU.
