Swedish experts call for national involvement in the EU's semiconductor initiative
The initiative, introduced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in autumn 2021, covers research, innovation, education and scaling up production to strengthen Europe's independence and competitiveness in the semiconductor industry. With a budget of SEK 160 billion for the first pillar of the project, it is a major investment where EU member states are expected to match with national funds.
Sweden, with its strong tradition in research and innovation, is well placed to contribute to and benefit from this initiative. The expert group therefore calls on the Swedish government to strengthen national support for the semiconductor sector by increasing funding to relevant authorities and academic institutions.
By taking a leading position in semiconductor development, Sweden can not only strengthen its industry and create new jobs, but also secure its long-term welfare and contribute to a sustainable transformation of the industry. The experts emphasize that it is urgent to act so that Sweden does not miss this important technological shift.
