Svensk Elektronik is granted the Re-lektronik project
– will lead a national initiative for circular and resilient electronics production
Svensk Elektronik, together with six partners, has been granted funding within Net Zero Industry for the three-year Re-lektronik project starting December 1, 2025. The purpose of the project is to drive development towards a more circular, resource-efficient and robust Swedish electronics production.
Re-lektronik brings together industry, research and recycling stakeholders in a national initiative with the goal of creating practical tools, standards and working methods that strengthen the sustainability and competitiveness of the electronics industry. The work focuses on five areas; materials and critical raw materials; product and service design; business models; value chains and policies and standards. The project will result in a practical handbook, a strategic roadmap of 5 to 10 years, and case studies that show how companies can switch from linear to circular production.
Svensk Elektronik leads and coordinates the project
As project coordinator, Svensk Elektronik is responsible for driving and coordinating the work packages, as well as engaging Svensk Elektronik members through participation in workshops and case studies. A handbook and a roadmap in close dialogue with the industry will be developed, and Svensk Elektronik ensures broad communication throughout the value chain, including dissemination of the project results.
– Through Re-lektronik, the industry gets concrete tools to become more resource-efficient and resilient, while strengthening its competitiveness with new business opportunities. Since we are the hub for the Swedish electronics industry, it is natural for us to take the lead in a project that will reduce the sector's climate impact and secure future value chains, says Malin Berglund, project manager at Svensk Elektronik.
Re-lektronik is being implemented together with Linköping University, Eskilstuna ElektronikPartner, EXMA Säkerhetssystem, Cirtag, Solai and Ragn-Sells. Svensk Elektronik and a couple of other partners have been granted funding, while other actors participate through in-kind contributions.
The project is funded through the Impact Innovation program Net Zero Industry, a joint initiative from the Swedish Energy Agency, Formas and Vinnova.
Project: Re-electronics
Major challenges in the electronics industry
The electronics industry is central to Sweden's electrification and digitalization, but faces major challenges – increasing electronic waste, limited access to critical raw materials and sensitive global value chains. These factors risk slowing down both the industry's competitiveness and the transition towards net zero emissions. Re-lektronik addresses these challenges by creating new knowledge, new strategies and concrete tools for the entire sector.
Expected effects
- reduce resource use and climate emissions.
- strengthen the industry's resilience and competitiveness.
- enable new circular business models.
- strengthen the supply of skills in sustainable electronics.
- lay the foundation for a circular and fossil-free electronics sector.
